Touristy way to see Berber people Jul 10, 2000
Matmata is a small Berber town in the south of Tunisia. Some of the local people in and around Matmata still live in traditional underground ‘troglodyte’ structures, also known as cave houses.

Such is cave house is created by digging a large pit in the dry earth. Then, at the sides of this pit artificial caves are created. Each cave is a separate room.

The first Star Wars movie (Episode IV: A New Hope, 1977) was partially filmed around Matmata. The original home of Luke Skywalker, when he lived with his aunt Beru and uncle Owen, is an actual troglodyte home.

You can travel to Matmata on your own and look around, if you’re staying in Sousse you can book a tour to the Matmata area. This tour includes a camel ride through the desert-like Matmata area and a visit to an original troglodyte home. It’s quite touristy, but that’s mainly because through the years tourism has become the main income for Berber people in and around Matmata. Since it is the easiest way to have a look into the life of Berber people, I personally think it can’t be missed.
