Matheran is the hill station closest to Mumbai city and a popular escape for cityfolk. There is a slow toy-train that takes you up from Neral on a scenic twisty route along the hills and minor waterfalls. Motor vehicles are banned in the town and one must climb on foot or horseback to get to the town. There are a few lodges and restaurants in the town that cater to tourist activity.

Best time to go is after or during monsoon, as the hillsides become lush green and beautiful. There are a host of scenic viewpoints that one can walk to from the central town area. Matheran area is also a popular destination for trekkers, as it has a series of trails that lead upto it and around it.
