Local culture meets paradise at Matemwe Bungalows Oct 25, 2008
On the mid-east coastline of Zanzibar, in between sleepy fishing towns and glossy resort areas, lies Matemwe village. Driving through the hilly, bumpy trail through the village (which is made up of three tiny settlements), you wonder where it will lead you. Winding through dirt paths that cross in front of small wood huts that are dotted in between with beaming, half-clothed local children, you begin to see the turquoise sea beyond the palm fringed coast. Higher up and gardens form into a road that leads to Matemwe Bungalows. This is the place I dreamed of!
Working in cooperation with local culture, this small, understated, yet high-end retreat leaves no stone unturned. Every environmental detail here has been thought of. They buy fresh produce and fish from local farmers and fisherman. However they also get specialties shipped in from all over...the result is definitely the best variety and quality cuisine on the island! WOW! The food is incredible! 12 private large bungalows on the ocean ensure privacy and luxury. However, the luxury is downplayed by the very organic and earthy nature of the setting. Bungalows are split level and really beautiful. Heavy wood beams, large stone shower stall and tub, huge comfy beds, a sitting area facing the outside, super high ceiling to a traditional thatch roof (where bush baby monkeys love to dance on at night!). Large verandas right next to the rock reef provide a constant display of beauty. Seaweed farmers plow through the shallow water at the shore in the early daytime, while dozens of dhows flow back at sunset. The veranda alone is a palate of photographic bliss!
An infinity pool set high on the rocks makes you feel one with the ocean. Floor cushions in an open-air stone "cliff room" is a breezy, quiet spot near the pool.
This spot is a gem. Hopefully a few of these photos tell the story~
