Massis Five Stars Hotel Sao Paulo Reviews
Good location, reasonable prices, old'ish rooms Jan 17, 2010
We decided to spend some time in Sao Paulo at the last minute, and were calling a variety of hotels from the airport hoping to book a place in the Jardins area of Sao Paulo, which is the district where a lot of shops and restaurants are. Unfortunately, most of the closer hotels were fully booked, but we were lucky to find Massis.
Location-wise it's about a 10-15 minute walk from Jardins, and feels more like a business hotel than anything else. It's right across the street from a large mall, which, although not very scenic, is convenient if you want to grab an inexpensive lunch or coffee.
The rooms are "apartment-style", with a small living room/TV, bedroom, and bathroom. Although it advertises itself as a 5-star hotel, it's probably more like a 3-star hotel, which, given the price/night of ~$140USD and decent location isn't too bad. The furniture is a bit old, the bedroom was a bit dark, and there was wiring and piping visible through the thin translucent plastic ceiling tiles of the bathroom, that gave it a muted "under-construction" or "work in progress" type feeling.
Internet costs extra. You can purchase a card at the front desk (I think it was around $5-10 for 3 days of access). Although there are a lot of access points throughout the hotel, I could never manage to get more than spotty reception. The connection was slow but usable for looking up quick information, but I wouldn't rely on it for getting any serious work done (you're on vacation, anyway!).
The breakfast buffet, which was included, is relatively lackluster. Most breakfast buffets in Brazil are fairly similar -- eggs, some slices of processed meat, pastries, and some fresh fruit -- but the eggs here tasted a bit too salty and runny, and the fruit didn't seem as fresh.
The service at the front desk was quite helpful. When we called in, they had English speakers to help with the booking. When we wanted to make a reservation for a restaurant, they called it in and arranged it for us. They also held our bags for us on the last day, for free, even though our flight didn't leave until late at night.
Overall, a good value, functional hotel at a reasonable location, as long as you aren't expecting all of the amenities and comforts of a "five-star" hotel.
