National Mosque of Malaysia Jan 13, 2013
Located in Kuala Lumpur, the National Mosque of Malaysia is capable of fitting approximately 15,000 visitors. It has beautiful gardens around it and with some small stalls selling souvenirs outside its main entrance. The building was originally designed by the Public Works Department and it represents the new-independent Malaysia. Its roof looks like an umbrella and there are pools as well as fountains at the side of the mosque. This tourist destination offers beautiful landscape and undeniably stunning view.

Getting there was easy. My friends and I went through a pedestrian tunnel. But, you are highly advised not to take this route. I can’t believe that I actually took this way! The tunnel is right under the bridge from the Kuala Lumpur train station (KTM). The pedestrian tunnel is no longer well-maintained since most pedestrians choose not to go through it today. It is very risky for one to walk through it alone – there was not even a single lamp in it! It was really dark – like the one you see in horror movies with zombies crawling in it. That was the first and the last time I will ever take that route! It may be the easiest way to get to the destination, but it doesn’t guarantee your safety, especially for female travellers. Few years back, a young school girl was raped and murdered in the tunnel. Some tourists would take this route because they never knew the history behind the tunnel’s isolation. As for me, I found out about it one day after I went through it. Thank God I wasn’t alone. However, it gave me eerie feelings while I walk through it.

For non-Muslim visitors, do check out for the recommended time of visit as the mosque is not open for everyone at all times. I couldn’t get in because it was not open for non-Muslim visitors when I came over for a visit. I was asked to wait for awhile. Due to time constraint, I had to leave earlier. However, I managed to take some photos of the building.
