Very welcoming Mosque not visited by many westerners Sep 27, 2012
The size of this magnificent building, its location and the English/Indonesian language barrier can be very intimidating at first. But rest assured that the staff are incredibly helpful and very curious of visitors with no specific religious denomination who are from foreign lands.

As a non-muslim I was not permitted to enter the prayer aread of the Masjid (mosque) but was instead provided with a security escort who guided me around the entire site and provided interesting information along the way. All the staff, including the General Manager were very helpful and were keen to have their photo taken with the visitors. It was a delightful surprise to be accepted with such interest and affection.

The mosque dome was built in the united states and is an impressive sight as their are no internal pillars holding it together. The interior is massive and muslims can be seen in prayer on most days, and in mass quantities on Fridays. There is a 100m tall tower, the top of which can be accessed by lift and offers a 360 degree view of the city of Surabaya, although pollution is a very present guest on the cityscape.

I would recommend visiting on a weekday before lunch as there were no other tourists there and gave for a more genuine insight into the religion, its people and their beliefs.

Definitely worth checking out if you are curious about Islam or a fan of grand architecture.
