Masada Backpacker Kota Kinabalu Reviews
Affordable but noisy backpacker Jan 29, 2014
This place is actually a hostel not a hotel so I'll comment on the fun side of things as well in this review.
In terms of value, the price is average for a hostel. We paid about 25 AUD per night for a private room. On the first night we stayed we got a double bed however we then came back after a two night trek and got a smaller twin room whilst a man staying on his own managed to get the double. Included in the price was bread, cereal, fruit and tea and coffee making facilities all day.
The hostel had only one computer available for internet usage however it was constantly slow or just down.
The hostel was very noisy, it's quite small and noise travels very easily from not only within the hostel but from the street as well. The television was easily heard from the rooms which are located off the lounge area. It was supposed to be turned off after 10pm but often it wouldn't be and one night we had to get up and ask to have it turned off.
On our second stay there was a whole family staying in one of the larger dorms. There was a number of adults as well as a few young children. They all showered at the same time and ate at the same time and seemed to take over the hostel completely. The children were crying and screaming and winging constantly and nothing seemed to be done about it.
Bathroom wise, there was only one toilet that wasn't part of a shower room so there were times where one needed to use the loo and couldn't because someone was showering. There was also only four showers in the whole hostel and they wern't part of a bathroom as such but just single showers with lockable doors so you either had to walk through the hostel in a towel to dry in your room or try and dry and get dressed in the shower once it was off.
Fun wise, it was a great place to meet other travellers. We would sit around the lounge and chat to others about their experience trekking Mt Kinabalu but that was pretty much it. There was no organisation of social nights or anything like that.
Service was not great, considering that there is always someone at the desk we expected more. There was no key, you had to ring the bell downstairs and sometimes you would be waiting forever to be let in. Most of the time, the staff just sat behind the desk on the internet.
Overall this hostel was ok for just a couple of nights but for a longer stay, especially if you're looking for more of the whole backpacker experience i'd say book somewhere else.
