Martha’s Guest House Puerto Octay Reviews
Martha’s Guest House May 27, 2013
Mrs. Martha’s place was fairly easy to find considering the wilderness and lack of signage in this area. It helped that we spoke some Spanish and that people were extremely helpful in directions. Even the cop that stopped me (I was going at least 80km/h on the 40km/h road) helped me with directions after I confused him with a big smile and questions in Serbian language and repetition of Mrs. Martha’s place and pointing at the map… It was one of the funniest cop situations I have been in… He just forfeited all the tickets that he was going to charge me and gave us directions with a big smile. Basically, you should stay on the local road towards Puerto Fonck and around 5-6km from the intersection (coming from Puerto Octay and you must stay on the asphalt road) you will see red house. Turn on the property (asphalt road ends there) and just drive to the house, some hundred meters away.
Guest house is located between Puerto Fonck and Puerto Octay, on the lake called Lago Llanquihue and it is surrounded with incredible string of beautiful volcanoes. Area is full of national parks and there is no much people moving around. House sits a bit away from the lake on the large property and it has good view of the area.
Place is run by Mrs. Martha and her mother. Well… mother is a distraction more than a help. I do not know the entire story, but mom was a society higher class lady and this is not really the place where she wants to stay. Inside of the house she placed good and pretty expensive art that simply does not go with the feel of the cabin, and all day long she plays classical music. She did not even want to talk to us first day, and later she was just cordial hahahah… The funniest thing is actually that father lives 200 meters away in the smaller house/cabin. Story is that mom kicked him out of the house but he wanted to live close to them. Father is an older gentleman, sharp contrast to mom, super friendly, talkative, interesting, in one word incredible guy. You had to see the way she looked at him talking to us… hate on the 100th degree… Of course we enjoyed the place and company of Mrs Martha and her father in fullest and did not care about mom (she was usually sitting in “her” chair in the front of the window).
They have few rooms with lots of warm blankets. It is cold in that area of the world and you can ask for small heater if you really need one. Bed is very comfortable and in general it is home away from home. Bathroom is shared and it has good hot water. There is no internet in the area, but you will survive not watching the screen for couple of days.
Breakfast is included in the price and it is incredibly tasty. Whatever you eat in this area it has REAL taste and it is super natural… They have their own animals so the meat, milk and eggs come fresh and pretty much perfect. And bacon, homemade bread…Anyway good place to stay.
