Marlborough Sounds Vacation Guide
The Marlborough Sounds covers, many different Sounds; Queen Charlotte, Pelorus, Kenerpuru and Mahau, all of which are really buried drowned Valleys, flooded by the ocean many million years ago. These waters now have many thousands of Mussel lines which hang from big black bouys, these lines go right to the bottom of the sea, and within the crystal clear clean waters the mussels cling to the lines and develop quickly, into the delicious Green Lip Mussels enjoyed by many.
There is plenty of accommadation available within the Marlborough Sounds, Some are sea access only, some you can drive to, several Hotel/Resorts, and Homestay B/B and some motels.
From both Havelock and Picton there are mail Boats which go to every house in the Sounds with mail most days, the tourists can travel down with these boats for a great peaciful day down the Sounds, sometimes even having a chance to fish for Blue Cod.
Hundreds of small launches and outboard moter boats race around with water skiers and also go out fishing.
TheInter-island Drive-on-drive-off Ferry from Wellington cruises down the Queen Charlotte Sounds, three times a day, to Picton.
Some of the hills along the Sounds have native bush full of native birds like Bell birds and Tui and Grey warbler, thier songs sound spectacular when heard from out on the water.
