Old fishermans village on a former Island Apr 06, 2011
Marken is a former Island in a former see. The see is dammed and became a lake, the IJsselmeer (previous: de Zuiderzee). The Island itself also became connected to the province of North Holland by a dam. Now it is easily accessible but you have to pay a fee to park your car on the 'Island'. You can also go by bike from Amsterdam, that is a 16 m ride.

The small fishermans village on the island is very small and cute. It has some traditional Dutch wooden houses and if you are lucky, you can still see some old people wearing traditional clothes. In summer, there is a ferry (every half an hour or so) that connects to Volendam. There is a small harbour with some cafe's where you can wait for the ferry.

I can recommend this as well. You can hire a bike in Amsterdam and ride it to Marken. Take the ferry, see Volendam or even the cheese farm Alida Hoeve and ride your bike back to Amsterdam. Even with no training you can ride it - no hills anywhere, and even I could manage it! :-)
