Marken Overview

Marken, a former island in what nowdays is called the IJsselmeer. Marken still has the mentality of the days from the early 20th century. The island is famous for its women who are still wearing their traditional costumes. Most of these women are in their 60's or even older. Therefor you won't see many men. The most famous lady in costume was Sijtje Boes.

The costumes will differ for special ocasions like Pentecost, this wear is told to be the most beautifull, wedding, Koninginnedag (Queensday) in which there are orange accents and funeral wear. For Pentecost people will wear antique suits and decorate them with other antique items.

Marken has very special houses, allmost all of them are built on wooden poles. Most of the houses are build on hills called 'werven'. The houses on these werven would stay dry in case of floodings.

Marken is accessible by car, althoug you are not allowed to use your car on the island, there is a huge parkingspace at the end of the dike. This dike starts at Monnickendam. There is a bus line running from Amsterdam Central Station to Marken and vice versa. A nother form of public transportation is a boat from Volendam to Marken, this boat only sails during the summer.
