the main theatre in the city May 24, 2013
The Mariinsky Theatre has always been a front and westernmost ( artistically advanced) Russian theater. That was until 1917, when the choreographer Marius Petipa built the "Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky, bursting onto the scene on tour overseas, and sat in the royal box, naturally, the king. The same is happening now: Valery Gergiev for the first time in the history of post-revolutionary Russia puts cyclopean Wagner's tetralogy "Der Ring des Nibelungen" and "Tristan", bringing the Mariinsky opera to the big leagues, a new building for the theater to come up with competitive international architectural celebrities (Dominique Perrault won the project) , compose exclusive travel to St. Petersburg major Western choreographers, sitting in the bed of the President of the Russian Federation.

In the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet give extra class. Mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina and other stars Gergiev call regularly return from their international orbits, coming tenor Placido Domingo, a few times a year you can hear the soprano Anna Netrebko, who makes a spectacular career in Europe and America. Broaching arabesque ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina became mandatory for communion tourist attraction. Mariinsky Orchestra - the best in the city and one of the best in the world. Opera is interesting to listen to than to watch. A truly theatrical good only the same "ring" in the set design and performances of George Tsypina Dmitry Chernjakova "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh", "Life for the Tsar", "Tristan and Isolde". The main ballet hits - rich "Sleeping Beauty" on the model of 1890 and cyberpunk ballets by William Forsythe. Be sure to go to the Mariinsky in June: the festival "Stars of the White Nights" Gergiev conducts his own five to seven times a week, and in addition, he manages to bring the city's most famous conductors and soloists.

I should notice that tickets for non Russian citizens cost 3 times hugher than for Russian citizens. City makes a donations for own citizens (how they explain difference in price).

Not easy to reach theatre because huge traffic delay. Be sure you have plenty of time before act starts.

We bought tickets for Opera "Nose" by Gogol. Not the best opera at Mariinsky. Better go to see Ballet.
