Nice cabin in the forest Oct 12, 2011
Mariholtet Sportsstue is a cabin located in the East Forest (Østmarka) in Oslo, 6,5 km from Skullerud (on metro line 3) and 4,5 km from Ellingsrud (on metro line 2). It is run by a very friendly young couple, Jan Erik and Kristin.

There are both inside and outdoor dinning areas. The inside is decorated in typical Norwegian cabin style with wooden walls and pine wood furniture. Old wooden cross country skis are decorating the walls. In one of the corners there is a nice fireplace. This is often lit during the winter season.

There are plenty of picnic tables outside, where you can enjoy a nice lunch on a sunny day. There is also a nice view of a small lake from the picnic tables.

If you haven´t brought your own lunch, you can buy open sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, cakes and cookies in the cabin. Prices range from $5-7. soft drinks, coffee, tea and hot chocolate are also available. The pastry and cakes all looked homemade. I tasted a sweet roll with raisins and almonds. It was fresh and very nice.

Next to the picnic tables there is a small enclosure with a little house, which is the home of 3 rabbits. A great attraction among the children. Toilets are located in a small cabin next to the main cabin. They were very clean and had plenty of toilet paper.

It was quiet when I was there, so Kristin came over for a chat. Such a nice and service minded person.

If you are out for a walk in this part of the forest, I can recommend Mariholtet Sportstue for a nice break and a bite to eat. If you´re not hungry, the hot chocolate was nice. Mariholtet Sportsstue can easily be reach from Ellingsrudåsen on metro line no 2 and from Oppsal, Bøler and Skullerud on metro line no 3. It´s a very popular place during the winter, since the ski tracks which passes the cabin are lit until late at night. The cabin is also open until 9 pm Tuesdays-Thursdays during the winter.

Opening hours are:

Tuesday-Friday: 10 am – 3 pm, Saturday – Sunday: 10 am – 4 pm, Monday: closed

Yes, it is Jutta! It´s one of the cabins in the East Forest (Østmarka). The trail starts a 10 minutes bus ride from my house.
