Mariehamn is the capital of Åland Islands, that is a autonomous monolingual (Swedish) region of Finland. The islands are only 38 kilometers far from the coast of Sweden. Mariehamn was founded in 1861, and is the only city of the area. The population is a little more than 11 000 people.
In winters Mariehamn is a quiet city, but in summers it is full of life with lots of events and tourists. One of the best known events is the Rock Off festival in mid July.
In summers (and winters) there is also live music in almost every pub in the city.
There is some very interesting museums in Mariehamn. Among them is the old sailship, Pommern, which often is the first thing you see if you arrive at Mariehamn by ship, Viking or Silja Line.
Other museums in Mariehamn are The Åland Maritime Museum and The Åland Museum.
There is also an airport outside the city.
