One of the Lighthouses of Lake Erie Mar 18, 2008
The Marblehead Lighthouse is located on the peninsula on which it sits on the shores of Lake Erie and near Sandusky Bay. It is still in operation today.

Built of limestone quarried in the area, the Marblehead Lighthouse was built in 1822. The structure stands 65 feet tall, and is the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes! The view from the water is magnificent! The white tower has a red top and railing. When photographed against a blue sky, the lighthouse is a favorite for professional and amateurs photographers.

The area is now owned by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and tours are offered in the summer months. Please check with Marblehead's official website for times.

The area is a popular tourist spot, so plan to visit early in the day. It is a great place to watch the sunset, and a beautiful outdoor setting for weddings.

Other areas close by to visit would be the town of Marblehead, East Harbor State Park, and Cedar Point Amusement Park.

This old lighthouse is definitely worth a visit!

Marblehead lighthouse is probably the most photographed and well-known sight on Lake Erie. It is also one of Ohio's newest State Parks. Marblehead Lighthouse is also the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes (since 1822). Contractor William Kelly built the 50-foot tower of native limestone. The base of the tower is 25 feet in diameter, with walls five feet thick. It narrows to twelve feet at the top with two-foot thick walls.

Tours are offered on weekday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., May 29 through August 31, and from 10:00 am to 3:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month from June through October. They are by donation only.

This is an excellent way to spend a relaxing day on the shore. There are ample picnicking areas. You can walk out on the stones into the Lake. There is a newly paved parking lot and plenty of parking.
