Dubrovnik As A Sea Power Jul 02, 2010
If you set off round the walls from Pile, this is about half way round. Not only does it give you a chance to get your breath back, and cool down a bit, but it is also very interesting.
Set on 2 floors up on the walls, the 'ground' floor looks at and explains the history of Dubrovnik as a seafaring nation, and how they accumulated their wealth and power.
The state was actually called Ragusa ( Dubrovnik is the Croation name for it) and it shows how the ragusans established themselves as the main sea trading port between east and west. looks at the history of the port and of the ships, and at how through commerce the Ragusans were among the first to establish ambassadors and consuls around the Mediterranean to deal with trade.
Upstairs there is a video presentation on the development of Ragusa, and a lot on the more modern ships as well as some interesting artefacts from their naval history.
Not going to take you ages to get round, but worth stopping to take a look as you pass by on your way around the walls.
Poor quality photos(had to use phone for inside) as like almost museums in the Balkans photographu is prohibited ;-)
