Marafor Dec 20, 2008
The biggest Roman place of worship on Croatian coast found its place in Porec. To be more accurate, it is the temple of Mars and Neptune whose remains can be seen on Marafor square. This is the place very near the old town centre of Porec located practically on the very end of the peninsula.

The name of the square probably originates in two words – “Mars” and “forum” (square). The present Marafor is significantly smaller than the previous square, and you can still see the remains of the ancient pavement. It is interesting to note that the houses have no standard fundaments but are directly “lying” on the pavement.

Porec (Parentium) was a well developed city in the ancient times. The restoration of many ancient buildings and building of the new ones can be ascribed to the Roman rear admiral Titus Abudius Vero who loved Porec very much. He incited the construction of the port with the quay on the north side of the peninsula. Even today you can find sunken setts there.

Marafor .    Marafor Square is Poreč’s oldest square. It was the site of an ancient Roman forum. Numerous bars were now dotted around its edge, but little remains of the actual forum. Better preserved are the Roman temple ruins just off the square… Porec, Croatia - A Mediterranean holiday steeped in History
