Maple Leaf Grille and Lounge Banff Reviews
Culinary pretentions not fulfilled Jan 31, 2016
N51°10'35" W115°34'17" with plenty of local and foreign fans, the Maple Leaf eschews all other pretensions in favour of one defining word: "Canadian". Hence, BC salmon, east coast cod, Albertan beef and Okanagan wine anchors the menu.
Maple Leaf is divided in several dining rooms. The wooden interior with its centrepiece staircase oozes style and raises the expectation Maple Leaf is a place for serious dining. Prices confirm this view.
In August 2015, we ordered a bottle of pinot noir, which had been stored too hot. The server rushed in an ice bucket before enjoying the wine. We liked the wine: good but we have tasted better Pinot Noir for CAN$50 per bottle. For main dishes, we ordered Albertan beef tenderloin and halibut, both CAN$42. The beef tenderloin had been prepared the way it was requested: rosé. Nice tender meat. The fish was good. Nice flavour and texture. We finished our diner with nice carrot cake dessert. Our server was a busy person, but never failed to look after its guests. He understood well that we needed more time before ordering and were not in a rush to finish dining.
The total dining experience, food, service and ambiance, was good but not remarkably good. For this price level, we expected more delicate culinary quality to make our dining experience special and memorable. That did not happen. Culinary pretentions must be fulfilled one day, but this was not that day for Maple Leaf.
