Manyatta Backpackers Hostel Jan 31, 2018
Manyatta Backpackers Hostel is one of the rare hostels in Nairobi. I do see potential for other hostels to pop around, especially because this one is so overrated and horrible that everything else would be good.

Location is in the relatively quiet area some two kilometers uphill from the center. Transportation is an issue because there are no buses passing by that area and moto guys are seriously dumb with their ways of ripping off anyone that is foreign… It is very common for their prices to be 5 times more than normal. I even resorted to showing them Uber prices (thanks god for Uber) which were lower than back of the motorcycle… Anyway, Nairobi is not the place to hang around anyway so suck it up for that short time you are around…

The only thing ( and probably most important) that is great are the people that are working in that place. They are happy, nice and very welcoming.

Hostel is in the old building that has last seen work done to it some 30-40 years ago… It is really in grave condition. The worst is flooring that is falling apart and you have to be very careful not to go through the floor. The guy came to fix one of the new holes and he placed a pathetic piece of thin plywood that you could break with one finger ahhahah Maintenance is a fiction that will not come to this theatre¬. Bathroom is also falling apart and the smallest things in there are the problem. There are no locks on the showers, the doors have nails coming out of them… WiFi is available, but power sockets are not always giving contact for your cables… They have lockers that are the most pathetic lockers I have ever seen. I dont even know what holds them together… Must be the paint…

Rooms have 6 beds each and most of them have mosquito nets. Upper beds are not secure because most of them have under boards slipping the holders… Barely found one to sleep on. Ceiling is moldy here and there, paint falling off, great for some kind of artistic movie.

They have a thin coffee and some kind of bread in the morning (toast or crape or some local thing cooked in the oil). Forget about spreads, there are none. Usually one banana goes with it and that’s your breakfast… There is a bar that serves beer and sodas. You can also score some water from there. Outside of the compound there are couple small shops where you can get nice fruits and cheaper water.

Price is 14$ which is way too much for this hole, especially if you know that heavenly hostels on the beaches near Mombasa cost no more than 10$... They also offer safaris and they are generally 20-30% more expensive than what you can get in the city.

NOT recommended.

Looks and sounds like the kind of place you want to run from as far and as fast as humanly possible! They should have paid you $14 to stay there!
