Mango House Galle Reviews
Mango House - or Monkey House Sep 02, 2011
There are many small guesthouses inside the old town in Galle. They are mostly situated in one of the small narrow streets. There are only a few hotels so most people stay in one of the guesthouses. I stayed in the Mango House which is located in one of the small side streets running parallel to the water edge of the old town.
The guest house got a few rooms in an old house and a small garden out in front of the house so you feel a bit away from the not very busy street out in front of the house. The decoration of the house is in line with the general appearance of an old historic town house. The furniture is old and the bed inside the room is one of those old beds where the mosquito net got lots of room to fly high on the corner poles.
My room got an air-con and shower - but nothing like the modern items like a television or any other electronics you have gotten so used to get in present day hotels. I got a small balcony out at the back of my room looking down at a small inside garden shared by a couple of houses in the area. This balcony isn’t really anything you can use for relaxation - you are much better off just using the living area shared by a couple of rooms on the first floor or the big living area downstairs where there are also a small area for sitting outside in the garden area.
On the first floor there is a big balcony in connection to the living area so you can sit up looking out at the garden at night if you want to enjoy the warm humid night instead of catching up on missing sleep inside an air-conditioned room after a long flight the night before.
Unfortunately there is no breakfast in the morning so you’ll have to find your breakfast elsewhere in the city if you are hungry. When I left in the morning to find breakfast I was a bit distracted by some visitors walking through the trees in the garden before they continued on to the wall towards the house next door - they continued up to the roof hanging out. It was the very first monkeys I saw in Sri Lanka so I found them quite interesting - after a while on the island you might not find them quite so appealing to have running around you when you might be eating breakfast.
In general I location of the Mango House is great - but it might be somewhat over prices for what it is - and there are many better value places around the island. But for a night it was ok and the air-condition do help secure a good night sleep if you just arrived from a colder climate like I had.
