Mandan Overview

Mandan is a decent sized town of about 20,000 (up 19% since 2000) located at the intersection of Interstate 94 (exits 152 through 155) and North Dakota Highway 6 just west of Bismarck in Morton County in South Central North Dakota. Mandan was settled in 1879 and was named for the Mandan Indians. In 2013 Mandan was a finalist in a contest to choose the "most patriotic city" in the United States. Mandan has been the county seat of Morton County since 1881. Morton County was organized in 1878 and was named for Oliver Morton the governor of Indiana during the Civil War.

Mandan has a nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. There are 2 districts and four individual locations in Mandan listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There are also quite a few attractions near Mandan like the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Historic Site.
