I say free - no one makes you buy things. But it's really hard not to.

Manchester Craft Centre is a converted market full of artists' and jewellery makers' studios. It's lovely. The studios have ceramics, paintings, textiles and lots of beautiful necklaces and earrings. I go there lots just to have a look, but it is also the best place in Manchester to have a coffee or to buy your mum a present.

Prices start at a few pounds for handmade card to a small fortune for a large painting. There are sometimes free events, like music or craft workshops. Looking about and wishing is free!
