Small but decent! Aug 14, 2011
Situated just off Deansgate, Manchester Cathedral is an impressive Anglican site to visit. Built in a Gothic style, and arguably not very big for a cathedral, the cathedral still packs in a lot of history. For example, the Angel Stone on show features from the Anglo-Saxon period and points to the fact that the site was associated with worship for many years. The cathedral also has a few Royal charters from the Tudor period. I thought the choir, which was restored in the seventeenth century, is remarkably intricate and impressive. The wood carvings were very nicely done. Though the stained glass windows were regrettably lost during the second world war, the new additions installed in the 1970s and 1990s are tastefully done. In the middle of the church, I thought the musical angels that were carved up on the roof interior were quite a nice feature.

The staff at the "reception area" are very helpful with hints and advice. When I was visiting, the main entrance area was also housing a photo exhibition, which had some very nice snaps to look through.

Although I was slightly shocked at how small the cathedral was, I'm very glad I visited it and think this is worth visiting if you are in Manchester.

Yeah, people are really surprised when they get to see what Manchester is really like. Most people still have a very out-dated image of the city.

Manchester Cathedral Apr 07, 2011
Manchester cathedral is one of the few old buildings in Manchester. It's medieval, although it looks modern because it was extensively remodelled by the Victorians.

As cathedrals go, it isn't very grand. It doesn't have a great steeple or an incredible ceiling, although it does have some nice carvings and some stunning modern stained glass. It wasn't built as a cathedral, but was converted into one as the population of Manchester rose in the 19th century. It is notorious for complaining bitterly about being used as the backdrop for some computer game or another.

But despite this, Manchester cathedral is worth a look. Entrance is free, and it is a pleasant place. It's also, typically for Manchester, a fantastic live music venue. Presumably they vet what bands they allow carefully, but the acoustics are great and it's a wonderful backdrop. If you get a chance to go to a gig here, you should.
