Manassas Air Show May 09, 2016
The Manassas Air Show takes place the first weekend in May. This year it was gray and chilly until some peaks of sun broke through later in the afternoon, but most visitors seemed to have a good time. This is a small air show that draws around 20,000 people, unlike the big ones held at air force bases that can draw hundreds of thousands. Taking place at Manassas Regional Airport in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., the event is free with parking at the nearby commuter train station and county fairgrounds. School buses ferry everyone back and forth to and from the airport.

There were several dozen aircraft strewn about and some opened up to climb in, but for a small fee, usually $5 a plane. The money collected goes to maintaining the vintage airplanes. Food vendors were set up and there was a section with seating roped off to watch the show. It costs $10 to sit in the roped-off section, but most folks carried in lawn chairs and blankets to watch the event. Play areas and video game trucks were set up for young children unimpressed or scared by the loud aircraft.

The show itself was impressive despite the foul weather. Each plane slowly went past the crowd with the pilot waving at everyone, then hit the runway and took off. The sanity of some of the pilots was in question with their loops through the sky, flying straight up and stalling out then starting up again as the plane tumbled erratically down. Crazy stuff. An old by-plane had a co-pilot hanging out of it as the plane flew overhead upside down. Unfortunately I didn’t get very many decent photos because of my cheap camera. An air show deserves a good camera with telephoto lenses to capture the craziness.

It was a fun afternoon sullied only by the long queues for the buses to get back to the parking lot. For this and probably any air show, a decent camera, some extra cash for food and a bit of patience is all you need for a good time.

Been there, done that...many years ago. I did ride in a bi-plane. I hope you had as much fun as I did.
