Sweet, sweet relief from Chennai!  Mamallapuram is tourist haunt about 2 hours south of Chennai.  Only 2 hours but what a world of a difference.  Chennai is a big city with tons of people and loud, crazy traffic.  Mamallapuram is a slow-paced beach town full of friendly people looking to chat all afternoon over some chai.    Mamallapuram’s claim to fame is its long history of superb stone carving that is very much alive today.  According to Lonely Plane...

An area that was hit by the tsunami but according to George wasn't too severely damaged because there weren't many houses build along the shore. I had gotten up early at 5 o'clock and as I had feared there was no way to get breakfast before 6 o' clock. So I grabbed two kit-kats from the mini bar to ensure that I would at least have something in my stomach for the next couple of hours. East Coast Road fe...

i've finally managed to escape the oh-so-fascinating world of hedge fund finance, and am now decadently indulging my long-suppressed wanderlust with 15 months on the road and around the world... *note: apart from the odd review (generally of something not found in your standard guide book), this is really more just a map of my travels than a proper blog, but if you want more information on anywhere i`ve been or what i`ve been up to, send me a message and i`ll see if i can rustle something up.

Arriving in Mamallapuram we stepped off the bus and were greeted by the usual chaos. We hadn't had time to reserve any accomodation but it proved not to have been necessary as there were plenty of people shouting at us offering rooms which we took as a good sign. We found the place which, according to the Lonely Planet, sounded most appropriate to our budget but were a bit surprised to find that a room with aircon is double the cost of non aircon rooms. Why? Despite the humidity and heat we d...
