Mama Testa - Simple but Good Tacos Jul 27, 2009
I am basing my definition of "authentic taco" on my assumption that if it is not like Taco Bell it has to be close to authentic Mexican. That may be stretching it.

But the tacos at Mama Testa in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego were good even if not authentic (which I'm sure they were close to). I had the beef tacos. You get three small (but plenty to fill you) tacos on corn tortillas, beans (black or refried) and rice for about $9.

The service was good, nothing too spectacular. There were tortilla chips served but no salsa. We figured out by watching others that you had to go inside (we ate on the patio) to the salsa bar. But the waitress never mentioned it.

Overall a good meal, authentic or not, for a fair price. I would recommend giving it a try if you are in the area.
