Mama Tau Private Game Lodge Limpopo Reviews
White Lions at Mama Tau Mar 14, 2010
To the West of Limpopo region, nestled in the deep heart of the Waterberg bushveld, Mama Tau is a hilly private reserve of 3.000 hectares. Haven of unspoiled nature at only 3 hours drive from Johannesburg and 1 hour to the Botswana border, in a malaria free area, Mama Tau (Mother of lions in northern Sotho) is also home to the rare white lions.
White Lions are not albino as many people believe. Instead, the white color is caused by a recessive gene known as chinchilla or color inhibitor. This results in the white appearance. They vary from blonde through to near white. The pigmentation can be seen particularly in the eyes, pads of the paws, and lip color. This coloration gives white lions a distinct disadvantage in nature because they are highly visible. It gives them away to their prey and makes them an attractive target for hunters.
Mama Tau's white lions are coming from Kruger park area (Mpumalanga), and are circulating freely in a large fenced part of the private reserve, along with brown cape lions. At Mama Tau you can choose from various activities like game drives, guided walks and bird watching. We chose the hightlight, the Lion drive. This guided drive among white and brown lions is organized for a minimum of 4 persons, and will allow you to share these wonderful predators' intimacy in their natural habitat. Drives are lead by an experienced guide in an open vehicle. You don‛t need a big lens as you get very close to them.
You can join the people at Mama Tau for one hour, one day, or more….
For Day Visitors the gate is open from 09.00 AM to 03.00 PM (closed on Wednesday). Prior reservation is mandatory and the rates are 70 ZAR for adults and 30 ZAR for children.
