A good way to view the island Jun 01, 2010
The Malta Sightseeing Bus Tour does several routes around the island, The North Route (Blue Bus), The South Route (Red Bus), Malta by Night and then there is also one available on the island of Gozo.

We opted to take the North Route, and when purchasing the bus tickets we also got a FREE Grand Harbour Cruise (which could be taken anytime as long as you kept your bus ticket and was approximately 2hrs long.)

As our hotel was one of the pick up points we did not have to wait long for a bus. Although, once at Sliema harbour we had to change buses for the North Route.

The tour took us the following route from Sliema:

Manoel Island, Ta'Xbiex Harbour, Msida yacht marina,Valletta, Hamrun and Sta Venera, San Anton Gardens, Mdina Glass, ta'Qali Crafts Village and Aviation Museum, Mosta, Mdina, Rabat, Bingemma, Mgarr, Golden Bay, Bugibba Square, St George's Bay, St Julian's Bay, Spinola Bay and Balluta Bay before returning back to Sliema.

The tour is an easy way of seeing much of the island and obviously with the opportunity to hop off/on buses at certain points is good too, there is also a running commentary in a choice of languages giving you the history and information about the areas you drive through and pass.

The only downside to the tour is the frequency of buses, especially at some of the more busier drop off areas. The next bus will drive by the same stop an hour after the previous one. Not a problem for the more remote stops along the tour, but we so wanted to see Mdina, but decided against it when seeing the length of the queue to get back on a bus. Normally we probably would have taken the chance but at that time my sister was pregnant and did not want to be waiting for ages in the rising temperatures.

All in all a great way to see a lot of the island, the tour itself takes about 3hrs if you stay on the bus for the entire tour. Would definitely recommend it for the price.

We only got to fly around Gozo after landing in the harbor with the seaplane. Gozo would be a definite excursion for our next Malta visit--we had already bought hop on/hop off bus tickets for Gozo but were unable to use them due to the impending high winds.

Hi Jeff & Jenny, yeah this was the hop on/hop off tour, great value for money. Did you get to see around Gozo, would definitely recommend it if you didn't, the ferry service runs a frequent service, so you wouldn't get stranded over there. =D

Allie, was this the "hop on/hop off" tour? We took a coach bus tour of the Island of Malta (including Mdina) and a separate tour just of Valetta. We also got the 2-hour Harbor Cruise by staying at Fortina Hotel in Sliema which owns the boat for the cruise. We were going to use "hop on/hop off" bus tour for Gozo, but then we would have had to take a ferry back to Malta since we flew over to Gozo in the morning on the seaplane and the winds were expected to pick up and prevent water landings.
