Maligne Lake Boat Cruise Reviews
It's the tourist shtickkk - expensive, tacky and cliched but worth it! Aug 17, 2014
So I wouldn't really call this as cheap. At 62$ for a boat ride that lasts for about 90 minutes (with only 15 of those spent at the touted Spirit Island), this boat ride isn't for the penny pinching or the generally wise ones. But I'm not wise... and when I travel, I like to do the clichéd thing. Which is exactly what I did..
Maligne Lake Boat cruises are operated by only one operator, and in the peak of summer operate nearly every 15 minutes as opposed to an hourly departure during non-peak season. The tickets can be purchased at the tourist office or in Jasper itself.
The boats are covered entirely with a little place in the back deck for those who love wind (or sick of the commentary) can step out. The boats are fairly small and wouldn't hold more than 50 I'm thinking. Most of them are run by young folks in their 20s which meant lots of Aussies as tour guides and/or boat drivers.
Lake Maligne is amazing, hands down. And if you're not in the mood to canoe the 5C water (yes, that's during summer!), then this is the right cruise for you. It takes you 2/3rds of the way to the very prized Spirit Island. You aren't allowed to get on it, but they park at a spot close to it so you can observe, and walk around for a few minutes.
The tour guide commentary was pretty good - not too preachy or screechy. And the best part, they don't expect you to tip!
Overall, I would recommend this trip to anyone. Not for the boat cruise itself, but they've monopolised the lake and you can't admire its beauty any other way. And you've GOT TO!
