YD5 - Malham and the source of the Aire Oct 30, 2010
Malham is one of the most attractive villages of the Yorkshire Dales, Well known sights around it are the small lake of Malham Tarn, the stark limestone scenery of Malham Cove and Gordale Scar and the small but appealing waterfall of Janet's Foss.

The Buck is a very pleasant pub and the Information Centre is well equipped and interesting.

I have been confused about the River Aire for years. Airedale is a term barely used at this part but Malhamdale only relates to a small distance.

I read now that that the Aire starts as a stream from Malham Tarn that goes under the ground until it surfaces at the base of Malham Cove. The term 'Airedale' comes into use further down where the river runs through an industrial area and ceases to be a dale in the usual sense of the word.
