I have spent 3 weeks in the Maldives for work (i know). Stayed in Male, which is NOT what you learn when you google Maldives.
Im gonna make this as quick and unpainful as possible: - Male: Your average capital, dirty and overcrowded. Well, sometimes overcrowded can be warm and friendly, but then this one is overcrowded by people who would not smile to a baby, to a hot loaf of bread! I have changed a total of 2 hotels and 4 rooms while staying there (quoting my collegue: shit holes). Ended up in a "Junior Suite" in a place called Nalahiya Hotel, newest place in town at the time: Livible. Do not believe what you read on the internet, about their facilities, they write Pool and Gym, but the fact is no one has any, plus, the first hotel i was in did not even have a restaurant! - Beaches: Haven't been to any! Spent 3 weeks in the Maldives, shame, bloody shame on me! Now I know i was there for work, but despite the 4 days off i had, finding somewhere to swim in a country that has 1192 islands did sound very tricky. Male does not have a beach, only boat parkings, jetties, quaies, whatever you want to call them. Notice that i am still refusing to count that shameful excuse of beach, the "artificial beach that was built by the japanese" as people call it. It is artificial, small, closed, and full of people swiming with their clothes and head gear on. What about the resorts? These are "private" islands, where you need a "private" boat and a "private" pass to get there. Ok, called them up, almost begged them to go there for the day, have a swim in one of those pictures i have googled and still did not see. Sorry, booked till April. A beautiful heaven, God's gift to the human race, with a waiting list. - Food: Most things are very spicy for the average person, but the one place i recomend would be Sala Thai, a very warm thai restaurant, run by a German who's married to a beautiful Thai cook. Flies in his ingredients fresh from Thailand, and you can feel it. Compliment any dish you have with a Mango on Sticky Rice desert and a shot of Blue Mountain coffee. It helps to have someone next to you as lovely as the one i had, but that's another story. Wrapping up: Spend as little time in Male as you can if you're planning to visit the Maldives, but again, if you are someone like me, who prefer to know the country through its people and their traditions, you'll be very disapointed. But if you're going there for white sandy beaches, island sunsets, making love in the water then refreshing with a nice PiƱa Colada so well decorated that you can fall in love with an orangutan in it, then, i'll just wait and read your review. |
