Maldon is a small town on the River Blackwater in Essex. Once a year, there is a race in the muddy river. It is the home of some Thames Barges, which are sailing ships that used to trade in the Thames and have detachable masts for passing under bridges. These are sometimes hired out for cruises or parties. There is no train station, a small number of shops, and it is the last town of any size before the Dengie Peninsula, where you could go to England's oldest church at Bradwell, and where there are a number of sailing marinas.

But I've gained several good friends, some of whom I think will stay friends for a very long time, a grounding in research, some career brownie points, and a working knowledge of several amazing cities. So many of my home friends have never ventured past the cafes and windows of Amsterdam, and I'm nagging all of them...

Basildon, England, UK -› London, England, UK -› ...
I am still stranded in Essex. I genuinely want to be with the folks right now, but golly, I do wish they lived somewhere where there was something to do that doesn't involve shopping! A couple of days ago I went to Lakeside, on Saturday I'll end up in Chelmsford, I'll be in Braintree on Monday, Basildon on Sunday - and there isn't a single one of those places has an art gallery or museum that isn't dedicated to the Essex regiment. Yes, I have seen the Eagle that the Essex ca...

This isn't strictly speaking a travel photo, but it is how my late dog, Sam, used to relax after a hard day walking. Wrecking my parent's bed. Totally fair, huh?
