Arrival in the Maldives...

OK, arriving in the Maldives will be in two parts: arriving in the Maldives itself, and arriving at the resort, which was the really impressive experience! Male airport isn't the most interesting place, and I was seriously ticked off when my bottle of gin was confiscated! Because it's a Muslim country, national laws don't allow the import of alcohol, or any pork products, and local laws say no dogs (no idea why...) - other Muslim nations (i.e., UAE - Dubai) allow you to take alcohol in,...

Maldives celebrates 42nd year of Independence! - dont ask me from who! Well, Like any other celebration we have in this island - football is always a way to start off anything... So, the celebration begun with the raising of the Flag and singing the national anthem (which by the way was my first time ever hearing the song!), yikes! Then, a friendly fotball match followed by all the screaming and shouting..I didnt know which team to cheer on as...

Think June 2nd, 1998 14:30h, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Our plane has just landed and we are back from the best vacation I ever had. We returned from the Maldives. What makes it the best vacation, you may ask? Well, two thoughts come to mind: 1) where do I start, and 2) I don't think I'll ever be able to discribe. Still, I'm gonna try, a little. We had the most beautiful weather the first half of our stay and a touch of rainseason in the second half. The clouds and the rain didn't get us down...

Why there arent any underwater shots this time

Some good news and bad news I guess.  Everyone keeps asking "where are all your underwater shots....did you go diving or what".  Good news is.......the diving was fantastic.  We saw Manta Rays on quite a few dives and its not even the time of year they are usually there.  In addition, as luck would have it, the videographer from the scuba shop was on the boat and in the water with us the day we saw 7 Mantas on one dive. Bad news......on the very first dive of the trip my ...

2-10 So… here I am in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Well, not quite in the middle. We’re almost to the Maldives by now, just passing the bottom of Sri Lanka to the west. I’ve sort of lost track of the days, I think we are on day 9 at sea?? We’ve had an absolutely amazing passage so far, really quite peaceful and uneventful, which doesn’t make for good blog stories though. This is probably the calmest the Indian Ocean has ever been, ten knots of wind, a couple foot swells, and cle...

Lets go on holiday to the Maldives with Mum and Dad. Ooh, I feel like a spare part!

That's not to say I didn't love the Maldives, and One&Only Kanahura when we went. It's just it's so couple-y and for a single fish it was a bit depressing! Mind you, four months later I was with Mark and we came back to the Maldives for our honeymoon, to One&Only Reethi Rah. So, Mum and Dad were going on holiday for their 30th Wedding Anniversary and because I was just finishing my degree at St Andrews they asked if I'd like to fly Business Class with Emirates to the Maldives and Dub...

This is a great way to travel around the thousands of islands of the Maldives. Around 2000 islands from part of this vast atoll, but only about 200 have people living on them and about 80% of those have resorts on them that cater for all budgets. Male is the capital and is pretty much buildings for the whole 2 kilometre diameter island. The airport is on its own island and one catches a ferry from the terminal to the main island. I went there in '97 when it was actually "visit Maldives year"...
