Malaysia travel budget Reviews
Malaysia / Brunei travel budget May 16, 2011
Country: Malaysia (incl Brunei)
Period visited: 2010 - 20 nights
Visa cost: n/a
Budget per day: 40 Euro
Actual per day: 66.5 Euro (without diving: 50)
Why so expensive?
Like in Thailand, I did a fair bit of diving in Malaysia, which attributes to about 30% or 40% of the total spending. Furthermore this was the end of my journey and I booked a few flights to save time. While flying with Air Asia is an absolute bargain, travelling to and from airports isn't. To make matters worse I had to spend two nights in a hotel near KL airport, which cost me a small fortune.
I also spent 11 days on Borneo (and one day in Brunei) where prices are about 50% higher than on peninsular Malaysia.
Alcohol is generally quite expensive throughout the country.
Can it be cheaper?
Definitely. Food and accommodation are a bargain, especially in peninsular Malaysia. If you don't travel to Borneo and travel around the country by bus, and don't drink alcohol, it is possible to survive on less than 25 Euros a day.
Average costs are very diverse and depending on the location:
Food & Drinks:
Beer: €2 (Penang) to € 5 (Kuala Lumpur)
Espresso: €2 (KL)
Meal: €0.50 (street food) to € 5 (small restaurant)
Single room: €4 (Penang) to €40 ("budget" hotel at KLIA)
