Malate Pensionne - reminiscent of a convent Jan 20, 2013
The strength of this hotel/inn is it's location within Malate. It is very close to the Remedios Circle and not far from the Robinson Mall.

My first impression when I checked in was that there are no guest's allowed in the rooms, even though I paid for a double and I am a single traveler. They have a buzzer that needs to be activated every time you enter or exit the main hotel.

The next surprise is that there isn't free WiFi in the rooms, only in the lobby and the password/username is guarded by the receptionist. She needs to type it in on your computer and you cannot see what it is. This is because they only have 2 user access to the internet. It is only for 30 minutes which means, you are disconnected once that time is up without warning - very inconvenient!

The place is quite and reminds me of a convent with the effigies of Jesus and crosses on the walls. The floors are wood and thus you hear every time someone walks in the hallway or shuts a door.

Another quirk is that there are two sacks of aromatic herbs in the room, pinned to the walls. This is to help keep the moisture and mold smell out and give the room a smell, similar to eucalyptus.

I would recommend this hotel to a backpacking couple who is just crashing and does not want to use the internet. For all others, I would find a different place to stay for convenience sake.

Nice clean rooms. Sep 09, 2011
We chose this over Friendly’s which is across the street from Malates. The room was clean, spacious, but had a small bathroom, but at least a hot shower. We did a fan room which was ok. The guesthouse is close to Robinsons shopping mall so it is walking distance and just over 100PHP to go to Mall of Asia by taxi. It’s also near several karaoke bars and “whore house”/Dancing girls. Internet is available but they charge 100+PHP/hour. Ya ok, hit up an internet café nearby.

Only caution is: there are several pick pocketers in the area. We caught at least 3 during our 2 day spa. Not on us personally, but towards other people. They are sly and sleek. Be careful!
