Makye Amye Lhasa Reviews
So-so but with a priceless view Jul 14, 2010
Makye Amye is located in a pretty yellow building at the south-east corner of the Barkhor circuit and it is said that this was once the dwelling of the 6th Dalai lama's mistress!
We chose this venue for its rooftop terrace but that is actually the only strong point it had going for it.
It's a great place to kick back with a coke or a cup of tea and watch the pilgrims on the Barkhor below.
We didn't check out the interior but the rooftop terrace was pleasant and well shaded with Tibetan cloth against the sun and crowded with Chinese tour groups; seated at long tables.
The staff told us that the terrace was full but we had a look for ourselves and insisted on joining a long table for eight on which only 2 other tourists were sitting.
There was an English menu with pictures but the staff was not so fluent in English and ran away each time we wanted to order. Eventually an English speaking staff member was summoned from downstairs to come and help.
The food itself is just so-so and is a mix of Western, Nepali and Tibetan cuisine. I would have thought the meals to be pretty "safe" in such a touristy spot but witnessed first hand that the lettuce and tomatoes were washed with tap water. Luckily it didn't affect my stomach in the end.
Since we really enjoyed the view, we wanted to return the next day for just drinks but were refused. In my guide book this place is recommended for drinks but apparently it's not possible between 16.00 and 21.00 hrs...when only eaters are allowed in. Hence we moved on to greener pastures...
