Mako (bento box) Dec 04, 2008
For years I've been reading about the fabulous bento box at Mako - a three tier wonder of gastronomic delights. You have to order it in advance, and it's about $70 (plus tax), but has enough food for 2-3 people. Normally I think people order it for concerts at the hollywood bowl, or beach picnics and the like; but I ordered it for a dinner with a friend. I was super excited because the reviews were so lovely. When I picked it up, wonderful smells were wafting from the beautiful lacquered box. I was soooo very hungry but I had to drive over to my friend's house and wait patiently until my friend got home - and patience was never my strong suit so it was quite an ordeal...

but ultimately worth the wait. when we lifted the lids off each tier, we were gifted with morsels of absolute delight. The first tier (appetizers) had a miso-glazed snapper (very flavorful and light), shrimp & crab & cucumber salad (refreshing), and veggie rolls. The second tier (entrees) held juicy lamb chops with a minty pesto sauce, wagyu meatballs (quite succulent), crispy chicken and chili shrimp. the last tier was filled with fresh fruit, brownies, toffee bits, macadamia tarts and apple tarts. yum!

all in all, a delicious meal that's beautifully gift wrapped. I think you can keep the bento box and reuse it at the restaurant and they'll refill the meal at a slight discount. It's very impressive and, I imagine, very effective for romantic dates. :) I would definitely order it again, especially if I go to the hollywood bowl during the summer.
