Makawao is a quaint little town located at the foot of Haleakala Mountain. Not much tourist traffic in this part of Maui due to it’s out of the way location and lack of attractions. You can get to Makawao by following Haleakala Highway up to the first traffic light then turning left. The buildings in Makawao are very old and very western looking. Horse riding by Hawaiian cowboys, known as paniolo’s, is pretty popular in Makawao. There are several big rodeos held each year.
