Makassar is the largest city in Sulawesi with 1.5 million inhabitants. It is a proud and historical city ruled by the Netherlands for many centuries. It houses one of the best preserved forts in Asia called Fort Rotterdam which was the seat of the dutch government. Makassar has also a beautiful national park visited on the XIX century by famous brittish naturalist Alfred Wallace.
