Maine Lobsters Reviews
Maine Lobster Season Jun 25, 2012
Maine is famous for lobsters and this is because the waters off the coast of Maine create the perfect conditions for lobsters to live and breed.
I dont want anyone to be confused by the FREE located next to my review, this is general information only, lobsters are usually listed as "market price" unless they are part of a dinner combo.
Many visitors to Maine think lobster season and associate that with a specific time frame in which lobsters are caught in Maine, but this is not the case. Unlike Maine's other seasonal staples such as blueberries and potatoes Lobster is caught year round.
In the summer months the predominate lobster on the market is going to be soft shell lobsters. Lobsters grow by shedding thier shell so a new shell is very soft hence the name. Many people like soft shell lobsters because they say the meat is sweeter and it is definatly more tender. Soft shells are cheaper than hard shells but they also have less meat as they have not grown fully into thier new shell. Maine is a tourism driven state and most of our tourist visit in the summer so tourists often experience soft shells when they order a full lobster.
In the winter months hard shell lobsters become the predominate lobster on the market. The shells harden as the lobster matures. The meat is a bit tougher (and in my opinion better than soft shell) and in the summer months the hard shells that are caught are usually the lobster that is shipped out. There are several companies that will ship live lobsters, and people usually send them as gifts. Live soft shell lobsters do not hold up well during shipping which is why the hard shell lobsters are used.
Maine has some very strict lobstering laws! Dont believe me go to any New Hampshire or Massachuesetts store and look at the size of the lobsters they are HUGE! In Maine lobstermen have a minimum and maximum size limit for lobster, this may sound crazy but it is designed to protect our lobsters. This ensure that Maine maintains healthy breeding population of lobsters. There are even laws governing lobster traps. Traps that are strung together have to be strung together with a rope that sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor so our whales and seals are protected as well.
When you think about it Maine lobster is very eco-freindly and it is actually a healthy food (if you dont saturate it in butter or mayonaise).
So when in Maine definatly try the lobster and even if you dont make it to Maine, now you know you can get some hard shells shipped right to your door!
