Diwali aka Deepavali is a major Hindu festival that is very significant in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. Known as the “Festival of Lights,” it symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind. Celebrations focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional diyas .
Fireworks are associated with the festival in many regions of India.
Deepavali is Sanskrit word and Diwali is in hindi. However, both names literally translated ...

Today, I met the other 2 members of my group...we are not a big group but it is nice. :) Both seem fairly nice.
I spent most of the day wandering around Bombay with the other girl on my tour (who's name I already forgot...oops...I am so terrible with names). It was fun. Time went by so fast just people watching and looking at all the shops. I had my first lassi today (a delicious fruit yogourt shake).
It is so insane how many people there are. The streets are u...

After yet another overnight train, I landed in Mumbai about 7 a.m. and headed for the Salvation Army hostel, serving up dorm beds for a mere 150 rupees, but just don't expect a hot shower and clean toilet. In fact, don't ever expect that anywhere in India. So far I've had cold showers or no shower, just a bucket with which to dump the cold water over my head. I have no hope for a hot shower until I get home I fear. So I registered for my bed and the fellow signing me in stra...

Not seeing Angelina or Brad
Mumbai exceeded our expectations, but then we were totally convinced we'd hate the place & it'd be a filth pit like Delhi. (Sorry Delhi Lovers).
We stayed 2 nights in Mubai, both in the vicinity of the Gateway To India monument, which is on the seafront. This area is clean and grand, almost like London in a heatwave. First night we stayed in a cheapo place with a splendid foyer fronting a decaying concrete borstal. However it had 2 things to reco...

Hello all, I am still alive after some great experiences. To catch everyone up since my last journal entry I stayed with our host Dennis in Baroda for another two days. He was an amazing host who spent the entire time dedicated to showing us everything in his home town. The day after we went to the Temple, Dennis took us around down town Baroda to do some shopping and visit various sites. I picked up a couple of shirts that were custom fitted by a tailor for less ...

I arrived, weary and tired on Monday after 27 hours on the train from Varanasi. Found a nice hotel to stay in, though it was necessary to treat myself :)
Made way to the famous Leopols Cafe for lunch, saw India Gate and went shopping for new sandals, and a pedicure to go with them (well, i had been travelling hard for over a month!). Met up with some fellow travellers and went to a couple of nightclubs in Mumbai, All that Jazz, and I can't remember the name of the other one!
On Tuesda...

Despite being winter, the temperature in Mumbai was similar to the early summer weather we had just left in Australia, plus humidity. Thankfully, we stayed with Anton (my boyfriend)'s parents in Malabar Hill which is on a pennisula and receives a lovely sea breeze. On our first morning, I was lucky enough to have a proper massage by a visiting masseuse, which was almost too relaxing for the day in town to follow! Anton's mum (Elaine) took us to Indigo Deli, which is a proper deli downtow...

Mumbai-formerly known as Bombay - is known as the New York of India with an estimated population of about 13 million (as of 2007). Along with its neighboring suburbs, it forms the world's fifth most populous metropolitan area with a population of about 20 million. The metro population ranking is projected to rise to 4th in the world by 2015 due to an annual growth rate of 2.2%. The city has a deep natural harbour and the port handles over half of India's passenger traffic and a significant am...

I have a million pictures from India.... On the other hand, cobbling together a story from my journals and letters and trying to do justice to how that country has coloured my memories and my perceptions from that day to this, has been, um, a challenge.

Delhi India
I am almost ready to begin the story of India… if I can figure out where to start. Never was much good at such annoying details
donc ensuite, encore...

I arrived in Mumbai for a five-day orientation last Saturday night. The airport seemed not radically different from home… until I got outside. Swarms of people behind a metal barrier. Thankfully
the AJWS arranged for a driver to pick me up (sweet!), and I spotted
him holding a sign with my name on it right away. Then I had to get my luggage cart through the crowd and shouting policemen on the sidewalk. My
first impressions of Mumbai on the drive to the hotel...

at last arrived India. As the pilot was announcing our arrival to Mumbai India, I was trying to get a glimpse of Mumbai from the plane. I could see lights across the country, the piece of land covered with glittering lights somehow looks really vast, at a point where I was confused if I was looking up to the sky or looking down staring at the city of Mumbai.
As soon as I grab my luggage from the rotating luggage claim counter I felt relieved from the long day travelling, alt...
