Mahalakshmi Temple Mumbai Reviews
People watching experience! Feb 05, 2013
If you are going to the tomb of Haji Ali (see my other review), then a quick visit to this temple is a must as it’s only five minutes away. In a commercial city where wealth and prosperity are keenly sought, it’s fitting that the Hindu goddess of wealth Lakshmi has her own place of worship in her honour! There are tons of flower and souvenir sellers near the entrance. Once inside, it is a fairly busy place. I like the walls of the shrine hall itself; many people try to fix a coin to the wall (without using glue or any additives of course!) and wealth and prosperity is guaranteed if your coin stays attached. Mine stayed on, so I guess the visit was worthwhile!
The temple is worth visiting for the people watching experience. As temple priests are keen to accept offerings (and it’s rumoured that they even resell the flowers that have been offered), it gives another insight into the financial aspect of religious practice. Worth a short side trip if you are seeing Haji Ali!
No pictures I’m afraid – it was a nice place but I didn’t feel like taking pictures!
