Brave it in 'the Bush'. Jan 08, 2013
Magnum's Hostel is a sociable hostel laid out like a wilderness-style type of accommodation. The buildings are wooden bungalows with patios leading around to all the rooms. There is a little cobbled pathway that leads down the centre of the area of shrubbery that the hostel is located in, all the bungalow span off this path. It's like walking through a forest, or what the Aussies affectionately call 'The Bush!'.
The private room we booked was $28 per night, was quite small, but adequate. It had a kettle, mugs, glasses, a fridge and showers and toilets within hobbling distance from the door! There is free wifi but it's only available in designated areas of the hostel - Outdoors, a cluster of picnic tables, alive with chatter! There's free air-con too, always a plus. The hostel is located about a 7 minute walk from the Greyhound bus terminal and a few minutes walk to the beach and the lagoon. It's located on the main street of Airlie Beach, close to McDonald's. There are 2 kitchens, one does not have any cooker hobs, just toasters. The other one with a cooker is very badly equipped. When we were there there was only one knife for chopping veg/meat!!! They also have BBQs for guest's use.
The main reception area gets very busy and we didn't think there was enough staff to handle all of the people coming through, checking in, out and booking tours. I had to wait about 10 minutes to ask a simple question that i got an answer to within seconds! Also, while you're talking to the reception staff, they are constantly answering the phone etc. Other than that though they are friendly and helpful and always have a smile for the guests. Be careful though, we felt they were trying to sway us towards doing certain trips (maybe the ones they receive more commission for?).
The walls to the rooms are quite thin. On the last night there was a couple in the adjoining room who insisted on blaring their music really loud. It also sounded like they were dancing the Riverdance in the room. The walls of our room were shaking they were so noisy. When i asked them to keep the noise down they were rude and dismissive. When i went to security he said he'd deal with it but the noise didn't stop so i presumed he didn't bother! This is a party hostel - It's right next to and part of a club/bar. It's a huge hostel. Probably holds a few hundred i'd say so it might not be the best place for peace an quiet.
