Magnetic Island Townsville Reviews
Serene Coves and beaches to yourself Oct 01, 2012
This is a must visit whilst in Townsville. We caught the ferry across for $32 return. Buses meet every ferry and this is the way that we were recommended to see the island. If you want to do the island on a budget then an all day ticket is ideal but at the end of the day we would have preferred to hire a car.
At the top of the east side is Horseshoe Bay which has the bars and cafes. These are the first and last watering holes that we saw all day so stock up here if you are making a day of the walking paths and bays. Watersports were available here but we arrived very early so the beach was quite empty and little pools had been formed by the tide going out. The water was both shallow and warm.
Following the footpath through the eucalypt trees, look out for koalas, we climbed over rocks to Balding Bay. This is a secluded nudist beach which is not accessible by road. I liked it here and would recommend visiting if you can bare the heat and steep rocky climb. You will want to stay here and take a dip just because you will be melting from the obstacle course you clambered through to get here.
A short walk from Balding Bay, maybe 600m, is Radical Bay. Not much going on here but has a car park so if you are driving you can park here and walk through to Balding Bay. This bay is between two cliffs so it stays cooler than the other bays.
Florence Bay is the bay to spend a few hours at. We were told that this is inaccessible by car but a 4wd will be fine and there is a car park a short way back. We walked along an unserviced road to get here. There are white markers in the sea a short distance from the shore indicating where the reef is for snorkeling.
I saw a medium size sting ray not far from the shore which darted past my feet. The waves are good for beginner surfing, or if like us, you don’t know how, you can jump them for hours!!
The buses run once an hour which gives you time to explore and they arrive at the ferry terminal approx. 5 minutes before departure.
Definitely worth the ferry crossing to take a dip in the clear blue sea which isn’t available at Townsville and great for full body tanning.

Magnetic Island was one of my highlights on the East Coast of Australia. Base Backpackers is a fantastic Resort! The staff are fantastic, the nightlife is good and the whole place in general has a great vibe. Plenty to do there whether it being the Koala Sanctuary or whether you just hire a moke and self drive around the island for a day!
Weather is fantastic pretty much all year round too! Great place to meet people. They also do a fantastic full moon party!
Dive school on site with canoe and snorkel hire also available.
Magnums backpackers on Magnetic Island isn't a patch on Base.
