Magnetic Island Vacation Guide
Magnetic Island lies of the coast of Townsvile. It got it's name from James Cook, whose compass needle went crazy when he reached it (no, the island is not magnetic).
You can get there by ferry from Townsville, and half of the island is National Park. The other half can be explored by bike or by "moke" (little 4x4s) which can be rented on the island.
There's rumoured to be some good scuba diving off the island, which is also famed for a rare species of marsupials by the name of Rock Wallabies, which are very small versions of their mainland cousins, and eat fruit and seeds, and are absolutely adorable.
