Magnetic Hill Dec 12, 2012
Leh, India is a launching pad more many different tourist locations throughout the Indian Himalayas. Some consist of day trips up to elevations of 18,000+ feet. However, it is advisable, after your initial acclimatization process in Leh proper (11,500') that you ease into the higher altitudes. One of the sights that you can see before embarking on higher adventures, is the western road out of Leh. In about an hour you can see the Indus River Valley and Magnetic Hill. The drive will be enjoyable simply due to the majestic scenery along the way. Magnetic Hill is a mountain with mysterious reverse polarity magnetism that is so strong that aircraft in the area have to avoid flying over it like the plague since it will interfere with the on board avionics and navigation equipment. The magnetic pull is so strong that our guide was able to place the car in neutral, get out and walk along side the car as it slowly but surely began to accelerate UPHILL. Amazing. Only a few minutes further west from this point, is a beautiful river junction between the Indus and another that flows to Pakistan. One river has brown water and the other a deep blue so the junction is quite a sight.
