American style food in La Mariscal - Magic Bean Aug 14, 2009
I have read about this place and wanted to try it, since last time I was in town, but didn't have the chance until now. I know they also have a hostel, but most of the time is crowded.
It was Friday morning and we decided to go to the Magic Bean for lunch. I went for the healthy stuff, even when my plan was getting a cup of coffee, I ended having a mora juice (very tasty) and to eat I ordered a fruit salad - no water melon please. It was colorful, not too much food, perfect size and they added some natural yogurt. Great! My eating partner, Shawn, got huevos rancheros, not light at all. It was: flour tortillas, smothered with in sauted onions, green & red peppers, refried beans, 2 fried eggs topped with cheese, pfff. This was one of the recommendations. If you order any of the recommendations, you'd get a free cup of coffee. That was a huge dish, so no problem if I got a bite, hehe, just to try :P The atmosphere was very nice. Like the wooden interior and the small and familiar environment. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and even have happy hours. Price is expensive compared to other places but you are in La Mariscal - a touristy area - in a touristy cafe, so you can't expect low prices. It's a nice spot, wi-fi, good service, but don't come here if you are looking for traditional food, this is more about American style twisted with some local flavors. Special deals: Breakfast: if you get any of the 3 recommendations you will get a free coffee. Furthermore, you have free coffee refill. Afternoon 3 - 7pm: -Sweet Happy Hour, free coffee for every dessert. -Happy Pancake Happy hour, free coffee with your selected pancake Part of the Back to Ecuador: an International Mini Meet Up and Gastronomic tour II - the sequel :P travel blog |

The Magic Bean is fabulous! I ate there many times while exploring Quito and would definately recommend it! Seating outside is the best.
