Mae Hong Son is surrounded by mountains and punctuated by small but picturesque Nong Jong Kham( Jong Kham lake). This town is still peacefull compare to Chiang Mai. The town's population is mostly Shan. Plenty guesthouses and hotels are available. From cheap to expansive. The area arround the town is famous for it's Karen and Shan villages, who can be visit by daytrips.
Best way to come to Mae Hong Son is by air. Several flight a day are going from Chiang mai to Mae Hong Son and backwards. A flight to Mae Hong Son takes 50 minutes. If you take the local bus to Mae Hong Son, you will be longer on the way to it. It takes about 11 hours with the local bus, who will stop for anything. It's worth trying it. And very cheap! Mae Hong Son is best visit between November and March when the town its most beautiful. During the raining season( June to October) travel in the province can be difficult because of the few paved roads.

This morning we were up quit early and desided to go back to Chiang Mai by plane. After packing our bags and picking up the laundry we went to the airport of Mae Hong Son. It's quit a big airport for such a small town. We bought two tickets at the desk of Thai Air. After 2 hours waiting the plane arrived and we could come on board. So far its been 23 months away, exploring Europe and Asia. Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, Pandas, Elephants, Komodo Dragons, Turtles, Tigers, rats, bats, cats and cockroaches. The Kremlin, Great Wall, Angkor, Bagan, Terracotta Warriors, Trans Siberian railway and fantastic travbuddy's! Stolen bags, crowbar threats, bank robbery, 2 motorbike crashes, 1 bus crash, pancreatis, erosion of the liver and kidneys but i'm still here and telling my tale! I had made one previous trip to this province to visit the town Pai. This is a cliche hippie town with tons of ex-pats who never went home, and countless backpackers with dreadlocks in need of a shower. That being said Pai is a fun place and pretty affordable. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the outdoors, there are tons of waterfalls, hot springs, etc. all in a relatively close proximity. Very easy to get to on a bike.
