"Mae De Deus" (Mother of God) Church Saligao Reviews
Mae De Deus (Mother of God) Church at Saligao Feb 22, 2010
This is one of the Gothic churches of Goa. It is located in Saligao, visible while travelling to Calangute on Chogm Road. This church is easily accessible to tourist but the right to enter inside the Church is restricted. The main door of the church is kept open with grilled gate. There is a clear view of the interior from there. At night the church is illuminated, thanks to the Goa Tourism Department. On the other side of the road is the cemetery designed similarly.
The Mae De Deus (Mother Of God) church was inaugurated on 26th November 1873. The statue for the main alter was brought from Old Goa. The man behind the success of this construction was Salvador Pinto a resident of Saligao. He suggested that Saligao should construct its own church and have a separate parish.
Note: there is also a chapel on the Chogm road with the same name.
I had the opportunity to get to places restricted to tourist but sadly the camera was not in my favor. I did manage to get a few decent enough shots of the church. If you are heading to north Goa beaches you must admire this man made wonder.
