Expensive but delightful way to Monte Aug 24, 2010
Monte should be regarded as a must-see but there is no need to have this expense, Buses run frequently at considerably less cost and I see no point in taking a return trip on the cablecar.

Having said that I must admit that we had no qualms about taking the cablecar up from the seafront in Funchal. Apart from the views, which are of course unimpeded, I always feel a sense of delight on these machines. Apparently the cablecar replaced a very popular rack railway that was demolished for its iron in wartime.

I know that it is possible to descend in a sort of basket called a 'toboggan, but that had little appeal - and you have to complete the journey back to Funchal by bus anyway.

I shall do a separate review on the gardens at Monte and a wonderful walk from there.

Haha, I remember getting stuck on these for about half an hour, half way up due to really strong winds!

I'd recommend the toboggan! Okay it is a tad expensive but it is a rather unique way to make your way down the hill.
